“Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka Essay

Metamorphosis. This means a change in form, structure, or appearance. Change is a major theme throughout Franz Kafka’s novella, The Metamorphosis. There is a significant relationship between the title, The Metamorphosis, and the theme of change. Kafka’s main character, Gregor Samsa, undergoes many changes and his transformation evokes change in his family. Several metamorphoses take place involving Gregor. First, a physical change occurs ‘When Gregor Samsa woke up one morning from unsettling dreams, he found himself changed in his bed into a monstrous vermin.’ After that happened, Gregor’s voice changes from human into the voice of a bug. ‘That was the voice of an animal,’ Gregor’s manager said, but the words seemed perfectly clear to him. Beginning to see things less and less, Gregor experiences a change in his vision. An example, found on page 29, would be Gregor seeing the hospital less and less distinctly. A mental change in Gregor occurs when he starts not caring about or having no consideration for his family. ‘ It hardly surprised him that he was showing so little consideration for the others; once such consideration had been his greatest pride.’ Everyone in the Samsa family experiences changes brought on by Gregor’s metamorphosis. Since Gregor’s physical change renders him no longer able to work, the family’s financial situation changes. Gregor’s mother, father, and sister have to get jobs. Mrs. Samsa, Gregor’s mother, sews lingerie for a local clothing store. His sister, who took a job as a salesgirl to help the family,  also learns French in the evening so she might get a better position in the future. Mr. Samsa, Gregor’s father, takes a job as a messenger for banking institutions. Turning into a bug, Gregor causes a lack of harmony among the family members. They keep away from him and will not even look at him. Now, because they are afraid of Gregor, at least two people always stay home together. Lifestyles that they used to have change. No maids want to stay. ‘†¦On the very first day the maid- it was not completely clear what and how much she knew of what happened- had begged his mother on bended knees to dismiss her immediately..;’ (26) Besides that, the necessity arises to rent  rooms out to three borders to add to their income. Grete, willingly at first and unwillingly at the end, does everything for Gregor, such as clean his room and give him his food. After the death of Gregor, the family’s feelings change from despair to hope and happiness. Death brings about a positive change in the way they now see Grete, as compared with the way they perceived her when Gregor was alive. Now to them Grete ‘†¦ had blossomed into a good looking good-looking, shapely girl.’ (58) Also, they wish to marry her off. In addition they plan to move into a new, more manageable home in which they can find relief. As the seasons bring life and death changes in the world of nature, so to in this story, does the life and death of Gregor Samsa bring profound changes not only to him as an individual but also to the lives of the others around him.

Candide Essay On Religion Voltaire’s Candide is a novel which contains conceptual ideas and at the same time is also exaggerated. Voltaire offers sad themes disguised by jokes and witticism, and the story itself presents a distinctive outlook on life. The crucial contrast in the story deals with irrational ideas as taught to Candide about being optimistic, versus reality as viewed by the rest of the world. The main theme which is presented throughout the novel is optimism. Out of every unfortunate situation in the story, Candide, the main character, has been advised by his philosopher-teacher that everything in the world happens for the better, because â€Å"Private misfortunes contribute to the general good, so that the more private misfortunes there are, the more we find that all is well† (Voltaire, p. 31). Pangloss, the philosopher, tries to defend his theories by determining the positive from the negative situations and by showing that misfortunes bring some privileges. As Candide grows up, whenever something unfortunate happens, Pangloss would turn the situation around, bringing out the good in it. Candide learns that optimism is â€Å"The passion for maintaining that all is right when all goes wrong † (Voltaire, p.86). According to Rene Pomeau, â€Å"Voltaire-Candide†¦have made him Candide acquainted with the bad and the good side of human existence. The moral of Candide is born out of its style; it is the art of extracting happiness from the desolate hopping-about of the human insect† (Adams; Pomeau p.137). Pomeau explains that Candide shows both sides of humanity; how both great and terrible events are standard in a human life. Also according to Pomeau, the whole point of the story is to debate between good and bad; for example, as Candide becomes more independent, he starts to doubt that only good comes out of life. Pangloss is a very hopeful character in the story because he refuses to accept bad. He is also somewhat naive and believes that he could make the world a better place by spreading his theories on optimism. When Candide had met up with Pangloss after a long period of time, Pangloss said that he was almost hanged, then dissected, then beaten. Candide asked the philosopher if he still thought that everything was for the better, and Pangloss replied that he still held his original views. No matter how little Pangloss believed in the fact that somehow everything would turn out well, he still maintained his original views. Voltaire exaggerates his point on optimism; there is nobody in reality who is positive about everything all the time, especially about something so horrible. One could conclude that Pangloss is an irrational and inane figure, and Voltaire tries to expose how incomprehensible his beliefs are which do not measure up to reality. According to Linguet, â€Å"Candide offers us the saddest of themes disguised under the merriest of jokes† (Adams; Wade p. 144). It seems as if Candide was written as a comedy; not because of humor, but because every time something bad occurs, a quick turn of events happens which bring everything back to normal. One moment Candide murders the brother of the woman he loves, the next moment he travels to a land where he sees women mating with monkeys. In instances like these, it doesn’t seem like Voltaire is serious about tragic events. During the course of Candide’s journey, an earthquake strikes, murdering thirty thousand men, women, and children. In reality, this is a horrible predicament to be involved with. In Pangloss’ world, † It is impossible for things not to be where they are, because everything is for the best† (Voltaire, p. 35), meaning that the earthquake was necessary in the course of nature, and so there was definitely a rationale for the situation. To show contrast in the story, Voltaire introduces a character whose beliefs are completely opposite than the beliefs of Pangloss. This character is Martin, a friend and advisor of Candide who he meets on his journey. Martin is also a scholar, and a spokesman for pessimism. Martin continuously tries to prove to Candide that there is little virtue, morality, and happiness in the world. When a cheerful couple are seen walking and singing, Candide tells Martin â€Å"At least you must admit that these people are happy. Until now, I h ave not found in the whole inhabited earth†¦anything but miserable people. But this girl and this monk, I’d be willing to bet, are very happy creatures† (Voltaire, p. 58). â€Å"I’ll bet they aren’t† (Voltaire p. 58), replies Martin, and he bets Candide that the couple are, in fact, depressed, and are disguising their unhappiness. Upon talking to the couple, Martin, ironically, proved correct, strengthening his pessimistic views. Martin claims to be a pessimist because he â€Å"knows what life is † (Voltaire, p. 117) which is why Martin concludes that man was born to suffer. The name Candide comes from the Latin word candidus, which means white, and symbolizes innocence. Perhaps Candide very readily believed in optimism at first because of his innocence. Candide grew up as a naive and vulnerable child in his own Eden and was only exposed to the brighter side of life and the idea that everything in the world happens for the better. He did not know what to expect in the real world and why things happened. As Candide progressed in life, though, his eyes opened and he became exposed to bad without goodness coming out of it, like when the people he cared for were harmed. Candide became more independent and learned to form his own opinions. He would look at the world and say exactly what he saw, and in every situation where Pangloss is absent, Candide would refer to Pangloss’ spirit: â€Å"What would Pangloss think?† Over time Cand ide realized that â€Å"Pangloss cruelly deceived him when he told him that all is for the best in this world † (Voltaire p.43). For a long time throughout Candide’s life, he believed strongly in optimism, not because he was forced to, but because he was raised in that manner. It is possible, however, that all along, deep down inside, Candide doubted the philosophies of his teacher because of his exposure to immorality in the real world. For example, Candide witnessed the public hanging of two Portuguese Jews simply because they refused to eat bacon for dinner. It was occurrences like these which demonstrated the inhumanity that one person can do to another, leading Candide to disbelieve Pangloss’ philosophies. Voltaire himself does not necessarily agree with the views of the philosopher Pangloss, that optimism is always the best way of looking at life. Many people in the story who were presumed to be dead were found to be alive and well. Cunegonde, the object of Candide’s affections, was thought dead by Candide but she had really been raped and sold into slavery. Pangloss was also presumed dead but he reappeared in Candide’s life. Although it is good that these people did not die, this is not an example of good coming from bad, since bad (their deaths) never even happened in the first place. This does not at all prove Pangloss’ ideas. It is debatable whether Candide is a novel whose purpose is to teach a moral and be analyzed, or if it was written for entertainment purposes only. According to I.O. Wade, in the Journal Encyclopedique, the story was written for entertainment purposes and the author should have dealt more with important matters such as religion instead of focusing on story line. Most of the story is about the journeys of Candide, and Voltaire did not include significant morals upon writing the novel. In Grimm’s review, it is also thought that Candide was not meant to be a high quality piece of work, but rather as something enjoyable. It is written in bad taste, yet filled with gaiety, and the amusing parts make it entertaining. According to Georges Ascoli, â€Å"Nothing could be more lively, more witty, or more instructive than this story†¦Too often Voltaire, delighted with his own artistic flair†¦gives us amusing stories†¦Let us take them for what they are, not giving too much historical credit†¦but tasting freely of the delights of well told stories† (Adams; Ascoli p.129). Ascoli takes Candide to be a witty and lively story despite the misfortune in the characters’ lives. He, too, thinks the story was written for entertainment in which Voltaire did a good job. The readers should accept the story for its zest, and not try to find a deep hidden meaning. As such, this argumentative paper seeks to critique an op-ed paper by Antoni which is entitled, ‘Abortion should be legal.’ Antoni takes a pro-abortion stance and argues that the choice should be left to the women to decide to have an abortion or not. Against this background, this paper is going to argue against abortion as suggested by Antoni since I strongly believe that abortion should be illegal. However, Antoni also suggests that abortion should be illegal. The paper will start by summarising the points made in this op-ed paper. The second part seeks to critique why abortion should not be legalized. A synthesis of the whole discussion will be carried at the end of the paper in order to arti culate the position taken by this writer in view of abortion. According to the op-ed article entitled ‘Abortion should be legal,’ there are different reasons why women should be given the opportunity to terminate unwanted pregnancies. This view is also supported by Warton (6) who suggests that abortion should be seen as the last resort for women to gain control of their lives after horrific situations leading to their pregnancies they would have encountered. In some cases, pregnancy is a result of incest or rape and it is advocated that a woman should have a choice of terminating the pregnancy in such a situation. This is seen as a viable alternative of liberating women who would have been traumatized by the experience encountered that could have led to the pregnancy. In the event that the pregnancy is against the mother’s wishes and is beyond her control, I agree that abortion should be treated as the most viable option that can liberate the mother from the sad events leading to the unwanted pregnancy. Tribe (3) also concurs that rape amounts to the denial of liberty to the victim who may live with sad memories or trauma which negatively impacts on her well being. In such as situation, termination of the pregnancy can be advocated. In some circumstances, pregnancy can be terminated if it endangers the life of the fetus or the mother and I share the same view with this idea. It may not be a noble idea to have a deformed child as she may not enjoy the life of a normal human being. In some instances, if the life of the mother is endangered as a result of the pregnancy, it can be terminated at an earlier date to avoid complicating her health which can lead to death. The case of Jane Roe v. Henry Wade is one good example where the US Supreme court upheld that the Constitution of the United States should not permit the government to interfere with a woman’s right to opt for an abortion. However, the anti-thesis statement of this op-ed sug gests that abortion should not be legal because it is immoral. I strongly believe in this assertion given that there is no person with a right to end life. Even a fetus must be given the right to life since its life cannot be simply terminated as a result of the mother’s wrongdoing in some cases. Usually, a child does not apply to be born hence it is the responsibility of the parents to make sure that the child is given the chance to be born alive. It is also my belief that ending life is ungodly given that we are all created in the image of God hence no one should have the right to end life.

Animal testing Essay Animal testing is used for many products worldwide. Also animal testing is used for a wide range of things, such as items in houses and medicines. Many places test on animals, such as private facilities, universities, and government laboratories. A big debate in today’s society is whether or not scientist should use animals for testing. Most of the animals die during or after the testing. Typing animal testing on images on the Internet it is most likely that gruesome images of rabbits, mice, cats, and dogs being used as test subjects will appear. Some people believe that animal testing has improved the world and continues to do so. They look, at the good side of what animal testing has done for humans. People want to make sure that the product that they are using is safe and won’t affect them in a negative way. Most people believe that it is okay as long as the animal is put to sleep while being tested on and if the animals feel no pain then it doesn’t matter that they are being tested on. Most people think that since most people eat animals; why not use them for testing, which can help humans. But other people think that there are better ways to conduct these experiments. These people can’t stand the fact that millions of animals die because of testing. Haugen, David Animal Experimentation A lot of animal testing is used for cosmetics. Items such as mascara and shaving cream are common cosmetics. The most used animals for animal testing are rabbits, guinea pigs, and mice or rats. It is important for some people to know that their cosmetics were not used to harm animals. However, other people say that they would rather have their products tested by animals because they would rather be safe and to make sure that they wont be affected by the product in a negative way. Another main reason for animal testing is for medical research. Medical research has helped technology. Scientist, want to make sure that they are testing with the most current technology and at this moment its animals. The study of animals helps scientist understand better. Ways that Animal testing has helped medial research is that it has helped find a cure for breast cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, and many others. Now days it seems not ethical for humans to be tested on, but in the past people in mental hospitals or prisons have been used as â€Å"guinea pigs†. In the past this behavior was acceptable. Humans that are tested subjects these days are able to speak up for themselves where animals are not capable of that. Most people that agree with animal testing have never been forced to do something that they didn’t have a say about and didn’t have rights. Darwin has showed that we share a common lineage with other animals, and a subsequent genetic research has shown the closeness of evolutionary links. This means that we are very similar to animal. This has pushed many large cosmetic companies to quit animal testing, but some of them don’t tell the complete truth. People have found that companies that say they are â€Å"animal testing free† usually have other companies test their products on animals for them. They can get away with having the other company willing to test for them because the companies that sell â€Å"animal tested free† products can get away with double or tripling the actual value because they know that customers want to see the words of animal tested free and then the company will share the profit with the other company that tested the products on the animals for them. n.p, A Critical Evaluation of Animal Research People read articles and the description of how they actually test the animal and it shocks them and they think that animal testing should be banned forever, but most of these people also don’t realize that animal testing has helped us with our medical research. A big question is, ‘is animal testing worth it†? Some people say no because more than half of the animals end up dying after testing. And the testing is usually for the humans and their bodies can react different than the animals, so most people believe that testing isn’t even worth it. The other side of the people believes that testing is worth it because even though animals die there is still progress in today’s medical research. The more that animals get tested on the more we come closer to a better society. They believe that scientists need to start with something and that something is testing on animals. This shows that cancer is different for animals and humans. Another example is the drug Thalidomide, which was to help prevent nausea and morning sickness for pregnant mothers. Thalidomide was tested on many animals and all of the animals showed the drug as being safe and okay. The drug ended up being unsafe, which caused babies to be born with deformities. The main deformity from this drug caused â€Å"flipper limbs†. This was when the legs and arms were really short and were joined at the hip and shoulder joints. The reason that all of the animals showed this drug to be safe was because the drug was not correctly tested. To be correctly tested they would have had to test the drug on pregnant animals to show accurate results, which shows another way that animal testing isn’t always effective and doesn’t always show the most accurate results. This is just two out of countless documents where animal testing failed to work. All the products were initially tested on animals and were thought to be safe for humans, but when given to humans, major consequences took place leading to deaths and deformities. Animal testing was disproven to be accurate in these tests. This leads people to believe that animal testing is not safe and that people shouldn’t always trust that animal testing would be accurate. Also, animals are easier to obtain in labs because scientist are so used to working with them. It’s easy to keep their day-to-day habits instead of changing their whole research and starting over. Also people see that animals die everyday from being tested and they couldn’t imagine seeing humans die occasionally from being experimented with. The rate that society is going, animal testing will always happen, but as time goes by it will be improved and become more humane. Some people believe that animals do not feel pain. Scientists assume though that they do feel pain. An animal has a vertebra back bone just like humans, which leads scientist to believe that they have the same nerves as us. This means that the animals might feel the same or similar to what we feel. Some scientists do believe that if the animal is in intense shock from the testing it won’t feel any pain. This information makes people aware of the effects of animal testing. Some people argue and say that instead of testing on animals test on humans because animals have no say in what happens to them as where humans have a voice and can speak up for themselves. The other side of the argument is that a human’s life is more valuable than an animal’s. These rights are what lead people to believe that humans are higher than animals, but the other side of the argument can prove this wrong in their own way. The other side of the argument says that since animals can feel pain they are the same equally as humans. People don’t think that humans and animals should be separated into different groups because they both suffer and can both die. People also point out that not all humans are capable of having all the characteristics that a normal human would have, such as infants or handicapped humans. These people that have less characteristics sometimes might even have less than an animal so an animal would be higher on power. Also since infants don’t have high levels of characteristics many Americans believe that they should be given equal power, which is the same power as a grown adult. They think this is right because their parents value them. But then that doesn’t work for pets if a human values them. This is very inconsistent it shows that life isn’t fair at times. But to be fair everything that is valued by an adult should have rights not just one half. One of the biggest issues that people use to defend animal testing is that the animals are going to die eventually anyway. They say that in nature animals would end up killing each other or dying of natural causes. This is very true, but the other side can argue and say that the way the animals are getting tested on is not â€Å"natural†. The animals end up dying, but a painful death that wasn’t planned to happen. Some humans torture other humans without their consent; such as rape and that it is looked down upon and is not acceptable in our society. Also people for animal testing say humans hunt the animals and kill them to eat, which is true. The other side states that it’s not the same because hunting is for a benefit to survive. They understand that animal testing could be for our benefit for example it can be good for medical research. Even though it can be beneficial, it still is different than hunting because animal testing can be a painful process for the animal and not every company uses it for benefits. So to make sure the pet has the best nutrition it has to get all of it in its dog food that people buy at the store for them. To make sure all of the right nutrients is in the dog food and won’t harm the animal scientists have to test the product on animals to get the best result. Scientists have also used animals for testing on worms, which is a medical problem for animals and have come up with a result that helps pet’s lives. Most people agree that this is right because it is actually benefiting the animals and their lives weren’t just a waste. I believe that animal testing isn’t ethical. I am an animal lover, but it’s not just that. I disagree in what takes place in the labs. I believe that humans and animals are equally on the same level. So when you see an animal cramped up in a tight, small cage think to yourself what if they were one of your friends or a family member? These animals never get affection so I imagine what life would be like growing up as a child with no one there to support me or lead the way for me. Animal testing has been around for years and people are just now realizing that it is harmful. I also don’t believe that animal testing is accurate. Rabbit’s eyes are different than ours. Rabbits feel more pain in their eyes than humans and the pain effects them longer and it takes a long time for the substance that we put in their eyes to go away. A rabbit’s eye is ten times more reactant to hydraulic solution than our eyes. After the rabbits are tested on scientists wait 14 days until they clean the solution out of their eyes. Whenever I’m in the shower and I get shampoo in my eyes I make sure that I clean them out right away, which is normal they shouldn’t have to have solution sitting in their eyes for two weeks when us humans cant even stand it for a minute. The rabbits are extremely affected by this test. The chemical causes swollen eyes, irritated and cloudy eyes, and inflamed skin around the eyes. Also they might endure ulcers, bleeding, or blindness. Once the test are finished the rabbits die. I believe most cosmetic companies are frauds. They say they are doing animal testing to make sure that the products are safe and that they care about their customers. In reality they just perform the animal testing so any customers don’t sue them. Many cosmetic companies say that the law requires them to perform test on animals to make sure their products are safe, but the companies don’t make that a law. So millions of animals suffer and die for selfish companies not wanting to get sued by their customers. I also believe that in the past when new products were first coming out it was okay because we didn’t even know how these products would affect anything. Old Testement Summaries Essay Isaiah The book of Isaiah is of the Prophetic genre. The basic theme of this book is found in Isaiah’s name: â€Å"Salvation Is of the Lord,† Isaiah was one of the greatest prophets of the Bible. Isaiah Prophesized that the messiah would be born in Bethlehem by a virgin. Isaiah was called the â€Å"evangelical prophet† because of his clear and detailed messianic prophecies. Isaiah spoke condemnation on the men in Judah because of their sins. In Isaiah God granted Hezekiah a fifteen-year extension of his life. Isaiah prophesized that Babylon would be judged and destroyed and God’s people would be released from captivity. The last chapters of Isaiah speak on peace, prosperity, and how justice would prevail. It also speaks on how God will make all things new. Proverbs The genre of Proverbs is wisdom. Proverbs describes the importance of living wisely and in the fear of the lord as opposed to following the seduction path of evil. Proverbs basically is a book of knowledge and understanding of life. The purpose of Proverbs is for gaining wisdom and directions, for receiving instructions on doing what’s right and just and fair. Proverbs tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. It also tells us to trust in the lord with all our hearts, and lean not on our own understanding; in all our ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct our path. Exodus The genre of Exodus is law. The theme of this book is that God reveals himself to his people and delivers them from slavery in Egypt to establish a covenant with them in the desert. This was done through Moses by the power of God through plagues. In Exodus reveals his name, his attributes, is redemption, his law and how he is to be worshiped. God departed the red sea allowing Israel to cross. The Egyptians followed and was destroyed in the red sea after God closed the sea. Judges The book of Judges is a narrative genre. The theme is in danger of losing the Promised Land; the Israelites are delivered again and again by God through leaders known as â€Å"judges.† The Israelites failed due to a lack of faith in God and a lack of obedience to him. In Judges God spoke to Moses from the burning bush, and promised to deliver the Israelites from enslavement. Sampson was destroyed due to his disobedience and due to his revealing his secret to Delilah. Daniel The genre of this book is Prophecy. The theme of Daniel is that God is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth. Daniel was one of the Prophets that found favor with God because of his faith, obedience and is belief in God. Daniel being a man of God was able to interpret the King’s dreams and visions. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego refused to serve Nebuchadnezzar’s Gods and were thrown into the burning fiery furnace. but because of their faith in the Most High God was protected from the burning fiery furnish. Daniel was thrown into the Lion’s Den because he was worshipping God three times a day but because of his Faith in God, God closed the Lion’s mouth and Daniel used them as pillows.

La Bolsa De Valores De Colombia QUE ES UNA BOLSA DE VALORES Una bolsa de valores es un establecimiento, que puede ser pà ºblico o privado, autorizado por los gobiernos de los paà ­ses, en el cual se negocian (compran y venden) tà ­tulos valores como acciones, bonos, tà ­tulos de deuda pà ºblica etc. La negociacià ³n de los tà ­tulos la realizan personas autorizadas las cuales se denominan corredores de bolsa (|brokers en ingles). Los corredores de bolsa son intermediarios entre un vendedor y un comprador de tà ­tulos, generalmente representan a uno de à ©stos y negocian por orden de à ©ste. Por realizar esta actividad, los corredores de bolsa cobran una comisià ³n. Sà ³lo los corredores de bolsa autorizados pueden llevar a cabo las negociaciones. Existe una serie de exigencias y normas muy estrictas que los rigen tanto a ellos como a las empresas que deseen negociar sus valores en la bolsa. Lo anterior permite que los inversionistas (personas o empresas que quieran invertir dinero en tà ­tulos valores) sientan confianza y seriedad a la hora de negociar en la bolsa. Las bolsas, por lo tanto, se pueden considerar como un mercado centralizado y regulado (mercado que recibe el nombre de MERCADO BURSATIL. Este mercado le permite a las empresas financiar sus proyectos y actividades a travà ©s de la venta de tà ­tulos. Igualmente, permite a los inversionistas opciones de inversià ³n a travà ©s de la compra de los tà ­tulos. HISTORIA DE LA BOLSA DE VALORES DE COLOMBIA La Bolsa de Valores de Colombia (BVC), creada el 3 DE JULIO DEL 2001, es el à ºnico mercado de acciones y otros valores de Colombia organizado a travà ©s de la estructura de bolsa. Anteriormente operaban tres bolsas de valores independientes Bolsa de Bogotà ¡ (1928), Bolsa de Medellà ­n (1961) y Bolsa de Occidente (Cali, 1983) que se fusionaron para crear la BVC. Tiene oficinas en Bogotà ¡, Medellà ­n, Cali, Barraquilla y Pereira. El resto del mercado se organiza a travà ©s de sistemas centralizados de transaccià ³n de operaciones que no hacen parte de la Bolsa de Valores de Colombia. Cuando la desigualdad o concentracià ³n de la propiedad es total, el indicador es uno. Su interpretacià ³n es bueno complementarla con la participacià ³n de la empresa en el sector respectivo. 2. à ndice de bursatilidad Accionaria (IBA) Mide la caracterà ­stica de una accià ³n basada en la facilidad para comprarla u ofrecerla en el mercado secundario. De acuerdo con la liquidez de la accià ³n y su negociabilidad se clasifica en alta, media, baja, minima y ninguna bursatilidad en una escala de 0 a 10. El calculo se basa en cuatro relaciones bà ¡sicas: el valor transado promedio por rueda, el numero de acciones transadas sobre el numero el numero de acciones en circulacià ³n, el numero de operaciones realizadas sobre el numero de ruedas realizadas y el numero de ruedas en que cotiza sobre el numero de ruedas realizadas. 3. à ndice de precios de la Bolsa de Bogota Es un indicador de la evolucià ³n de los precios de las acciones mas representativas que se transan en las Bolsas de Bogota. Su variacià ³n indica la tendencia al alza o a la baja de los precios de las acciones. Su objetivo como indicador no difiere de los utilizados a nivel internacional, sin embargo, diferente de estos por la forma de su cà ¡lculo al basarse en una canasta de acciones variable. (Guzmà ¡n V. Alexander, Pinilla S. Roberto Valero R. Luis, 2000, pp. 71-72). Esta canasta esta conformada por las vite acciones de mayor frecuencia de transaccià ³n en el mercado durante los à ºltimos dos aà ±os o 48 quincenas anteriores a la quincena correspondiente a la fecha del calculo. Su fecha base de calculo es el dà ­a dos de enero de 1991. Para su cà ¡lculo se multiplica el à ºltimo precio de cada accià ³n por un peso de ponderacià ³n. La sumatoria de estos veinte productos constituye el valor del à ­ndice del dà ­a. La ponderacià ³n es necesaria para minimizar la diferencia entre el precio real de una accià ³n y su valor calculado a partir del à ­ndice. Es importante advertir que todas las acciones tienen un valor nominal y mercados diferentes, que en algunos casos difieren en gran proporcià ³n. La ponderacià ³n tambià ©n es necesaria para que la participacià ³n de cada accià ³n dentro del à ­ndice guarde cierta proporcionalidad con su importancia en el mercado. La ponderacià ³n se basa en la cantidad de acciones negociadas de cada empresa en los à ºltimos tres meses. Este modelo se basa en ajustes quincenales de los pesos de ponderacià ³n y se cuenta con mecanismos matemà ¡ticos de ajuste para disminuir cambios bruscos en los pesos de ponderacià ³n de las acciones. El objetivo de estos ajustes busca que los cambios en el indicador obedezcan en mayor parte a cambios en los precios en las acciones. El modelo tiene en cuenta los cambios en el valor nominal de las acciones (Split) y la adicià ³n o retiro de compaà ±Ãƒ ­as. Para este caso se debe reprocesar la informacià ³n histà ³rica de tal suerte que siempre sea comparable. No incluye en su cà ¡lculo correcciones por aumento de acciones en circulacià ³n. Su presentacià ³n en el mercado se hace diariamente junto con la grafica del comportamiento de los à ºltimos dos meses y de las à ºltimas cincuenta semanas. Formas de negociacià ³n: Fijacià ³n del precio La Bolsa de Tokio, como cualquier otro mercado de valores del mundo, tiene como cometido poner en contacto oferta y demanda con el fin de establecer precios competitivos. Y para alcanzar este objetivo las diferentes bolsas recurren a distintos mecanismos y formas de negociacià ³n. En la TSE, podemos distinguir tres â€Å"reglas de juego† diferentes, de acuerdo al momento y las condiciones que se està ©n dando. Estas tres formas son: Itayose, Zabara y las subastas. * Itayose: Este sistema su utiliza para fijar precios de apertura y cierre de cada una de las dos sesiones diarias y para fijar el nuevo precio inicial tras una parada de negociacià ³n (trading hault). El à ºltimo caso en que se usa es para fijar un precio tras una cotizacià ³n especial (special quote).Bajo este sistema todas las à ³rdenes que se introducen en el libro registro de anotaciones se tratan como simultà ¡neas, es decir que se suprime la prioridad de tiempo. Como se calcula este precio de equilibrio, es algo que viene determinado por el volumen agregado de à ³rdenes de compra y venta que existen. De hecho, el precio que resulta de una negociacià ³n con el mà ©todo Itayose serà ¡ aquel que equilibre en mayor medida oferta y demanda, ejecutando las à ³rdenes de compra/venta con precios superiores/inferiores al de equilibrio. * Zaraba: Es el mà ©todo de fijacià ³n de precios que se usa en la negociacià ³n continua de la sesiones. Es la ejecucià ³n habitual de las à ³rdenes de oferta y demanda tras la fijacià ³n del precio inicial.A medida que nuevas à ³rdenes llegan al libro registro, estas se agregan a las ya existentes y se ejecutan si procede, o se almacenan en espera de ser ejecutadas. * Subastas (ToSTNeT-1 y ToSTNeT-2): Estos dos mecanismos fueron introducidos en 1997 y 1998 respectivamente y son bà ¡sicamente sistemas electrà ³nicos de negociacià ³n en subastas y tienen como fin facilitar el comercio de grandes volà ºmenes de acciones. Este tipo de negociacià ³n esta restringida a las acciones domà ©sticas. Para estas negociaciones existen tres sesiones diarias: 8:20-9:00AM, 11:00-12:00PM y de 15:00-16:30PM. Liquidacià ³n y compensacià ³n Las tareas de compensacià ³n y liquidacià ³n resultantes de las operaciones de mercado, son llevadas a acabo por dos empresas independientes. La compensacià ³n, es decir, el balanceo individual de cada agente que determina la cantidad de acciones que al final de la jornada compra, vende y guarda, lo realiza la corporacià ³n JSCC o Japan Securities Clearing Corporation. Esta empresa es comà ºn a las seis bolsas niponas, ya que las seis està ¡n interconectadas. Por lo tanto, su trabajo es determinar los saldos y movimiento de acciones entre las diferentes partes y agentes y transmitir esa informacià ³n a los liquidadores. La liquidacià ³n es el traspaso efectivo, el cambio de manos, de unos individuos, (vendedores) hacia otros (los compradores). Las funciones propias de la liquidacià ³n son llevadas a cabo por la empresa JASDEC o Japan Securities Depository Center. Inc. Y estas funciones son: * Custodiar los saldos de acciones de los agentes participantes, y ejecutar las transferencias de unos a otros de acuerdo a las anotaciones en cuenta y a la informacià ³n que le suministra l JSCC. * Otorga los permisos para la posesià ³n directa de acciones. * Eliminar los riegos de comportamiento oportunista inherentes al intercambio. * Asegurar el crà ©dito de los participantes. Establecer garantà ­as en caso de incumplimiento o impago. Paternoster Square. LSE ocupa el edificio de la derecha. LA BOLSA DE LONDRES (London Stock Exchange-LSE) es la bolsa de valores localizada en Londres, Inglaterra. Fue fundada en 1801, y actualmente es una de las bolsas de acciones mà ¡s grandes del mundo. Muchos de sus valores son internacionales pero cuenta tambià ©n con numerosos valores de compaà ±Ãƒ ­as brità ¡nicas. Sus actuales instalaciones està ¡n situadas en Paternoster Square, cerca de la catedral de San Pablo, en la ciudad de Londres. Origen del comercio de valores El comercio de valores comenzà ³ para financiar dos viajes: el intento de la Compaà ±Ãƒ ­a de Moscovia de llegar a China cruzando el Mar Blanco al norte de Rusia, y el viaje de la Compaà ±Ãƒ ­a Brità ¡nica de las Indias Orientales a la India. Al no ser capaces de financiar tan costosos viajes con su propio capital, las compaà ±Ãƒ ­as recaudaron dinero vendiendo parte de sus valores a mercaderes, concedià ©ndoles a cambio una parte de los beneficios de la compaà ±Ãƒ ­a. La idea pronto tomà ³ fuerza y se calcula que para 1695 habà ­a mà ¡s de 140 empresas que comerciaban con sus propias valores. El comercio de valores se concentrà ³ principalmente en una zona de Londres llamada Exchange alley o Change alley, que era un pequeà ±o callejà ³n de una zona residencial de Londres. Dicha zona concentraba numerosos cofee shops, y principalmente en dos de ellos se centrà ³ el comercio de acciones: el Jonathans y el Garraways. El broker John Castaing publicaba una lista del precio de los valores a la que llamaron El curso del intercambio y otras cosas en dichos cofee-shops. Licencias para los brokers Algunos brokers, usando informacià ³n confidencial que no estaba al alcance del pà ºblico, realizaban prà ¡cticas poco à ©ticas. Para evitar este tipo de sucesos, en 1967 se creà ³ una ley que obligaba a todos los brokers a adquirir una licencia y a jurar un pacto en el que indicaban que serà ­an justos y legales en la compra-venta de valores. El South Sea Blue El Change Alley prosperà ³ durante varios aà ±os, aunque esto cambio cuando sufrià ³ un revà ©s en el aà ±o 1720. Habà ­a una empresa llamada el South Sea Blue, que habà ­a sido creada entre el Gobierno y John Blunt. Dicha empresa habà ­a causado una gran excitacià ³n entre los brokers. La empresa llevaba nueve aà ±os no siendo rentable, y el Gobierno quiso vender valores para poder hacer frente a la deuda acumulada. Los valores salieron a subasta a 128 £, pero rà ¡pidamente alcanzaron el valor de 1050 £ en apenas 6 meses. La burbuja inevitablemente explotà ³, haciendo caer los valores a 124 £. El suceso creo un clamor popular, lo que obligà ³ al gobierno a modificar la legislacià ³n para prevenir futuras burbujas como à ©sta. El mercado de valores tardà ³ mucho tiempo en recuperarse de este evento. Threadneedle Street y Capel Court El cofee-shop Jonathans se quemà ³ en 1748, y si aà ±adimos el creciente hacinamiento en la zona del Change Alley, provocà ³ que los brokers construyeran un nuevo Jonathans en la calle Threadneedle Street, y empezaron a cobrar por la entrada. El edificio rà ¡pidamente cambio su nombre por Bolsa de valores, y en 1801 volvià ³ a cambiar su nombre a Habitacià ³n de subscripcià ³n de valores tras entrar en vigor la nueva legislacià ³n. Aun y todo esto no parecà ­a suficiente, por lo que se trasladaron al recià ©n construido Capel Court. La bolsa se recuperà ³ cerca del aà ±o 1820, con el crecimiento de las industrias del ferrocarril, minerà ­a, canales y seguros. Rà ¡pidamente empezaron a crearse otras bolsas a lo largo del reino unido, y se aà ±adià ³ el comercio de bonos a la de los valores. Lema Su lema fue creado en 1923. En latà ­n es Dictum meum pactum, que se puede traducir como â€Å"Mi palabra es mi pacto†,[1] haciendo referencia a que habà ­a que cumplir con lo que cada uno habà ­a dicho BOLSA DE VALORES DE NEW YORK La Bolsa de Valores o Bolsa es una organizacià ³n financiera donde las mercancà ­as de las compaà ±Ãƒ ­as y otros valores son negociados. Los valores negociados enla bolsa incluyen acciones emitidas por las compaà ±Ãƒ ­as, unidades de consorcios y bonos o certificados de inversià ³n. En el foro de la Roma antigua ya existà ­a una prà ¡ctica similar al mercado bursà ¡til. Hasta 1487, el comercio a travà ©s de documentos se realizaba en exteriores, en las calles y aceras. Entonces, en la ciudad de Brujas, actualmente Bà ©lgica, la casa de Van Der Bursen comenzà ³ a utilizarse como locacià ³n diseà ±ada para la negociacià ³n de mercancà ­as. La Dutch East India Company fue la primera compaà ±Ãƒ ­a que emitià ³ acciones y bonos en 1602 en la bolsa de cambio de Amsterdam. La bolsa de cambio de Londres se establecià ³ en la ciudad en 1690. Los mercados bursà ¡tiles de Parà ­s y Nueva York no se crearon hasta el siglo XVIII. El celebrado Wall Street, en Manhattan, abrigà ³ el centro de operaciones de la Bolsa de Valores de Nueva York en 1792. La Bolsa de Valores de Nueva York (New York Stock Exchange, NYSE) junto a NASDAQ (North American Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) y AMEX (American Exchange) son probablemente los à ­ndices de intercambio mercantil mà ¡s importantes del mundo. La crisis mà ¡s importante del mundo capitalista ocurrià ³ el 29 de Octubre de 1929. La Bolsa de Valores de Nueva York tenà ­a 13 millones de acciones para vender pero solo un pequeà ±o grupo de compradores. Consecuentemente, los precios de las acciones cayeron generando un caos catastrà ³fico enla bolsa de Nueva York. Miles de bancos, industrias y compaà ±Ãƒ ­as rurales se fueron a la bancarrota y al menos 12 millones de norteamericanos quedaron sin empleo. Tratando de enfrentar la crisis, los Estados Unidos redujeron fuertemente las compras en el extranjero y suspendieron todos los prà ©stamos internacionales, extendiendo la crisis por todo el mundo. En los à ºltimos 50 aà ±os, sin embargo, las grandes corporaciones han dominado la economà ­a americana y han asumido dimensiones globales (GMC, Coca-Cola, General Electric, Ford, Exxon, IBM, Microsoft, ATT, etc.) Debido a la competencia y para complacer a la gente comà ºn, las corporaciones han creado la posibilidad de que cualquier americano pueda comprar acciones. La Bolsa de Nueva York (New York Stock Exchange, NYSE, en inglà ©s) es el mayor mercado de valores del mundo en volumen monetario y el primero en nà ºmero de empresas adscritas. Su masa en acciones fue superada por la del NASDAQ [1] durante los aà ±os 90, pero el capital de las compaà ±Ãƒ ­as listadas en la NYSE es cinco veces mayor que en el NASDAQ. La Bolsa de Nueva York cuenta con un volumen anual de transacciones de 21 billones de dà ³lares, incluyendo los 7,1 billones de compaà ±Ãƒ ­as no estadounidenses. Sus antecedentes se remontan a 1792, cuando 24 comerciantes y corredores de Nueva York firmaron el acuerdo conocido como Buttonwood Agreement, en el cual se establecà ­an reglas para comerciar con acciones. Fue creada en 1817, cuando un grupo de corredores de bolsa se organizaron formando un comità © llamado New York Stock and Exchange Board (NYSEB) con la finalidad de poder controlar el flujo de acciones que en aquellos tiempos se negociaban libremente y principalmente en la acera de Wall Street. En 1863 cambià ³ de nombre por el de New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), nombre que conserva hasta nuestros dà ­as, y se establece en Wall Street esquina con Broad Street dos aà ±os despuà ©s. En 1918, despuà ©s de la Primera Guerra Mundial, se convierte en la principal casa de bolsa del mundo, dejando atrà ¡s a la de Londres. El jueves 24 de octubre de 1929, llamado a partir de entonces el Jueves Negro, se produjo una de las mà ¡s grandes caà ­das en esta bolsa, que producirà ­a la recesià ³n econà ³mica mà ¡s importante de los Estados Unidos en el siglo XX, la Gran Depresià ³n. Actualmente es administrada por el NYSE Group, que fue formado con la fusià ³n de NYSE y Archipielago Holdings, una bolsa de valores electrà ³nica. NYSE Group cotiza actualmente en su propia bolsa de valores. En 2007 formà ³ junto a la bolsa europea Euronext: NYSE Euronext. SISTEMA FINANCIERO COLOMBIANO Composicià ³n Se Compone principalmente de instituciones financieras (bancos, corporaciones financieras) y las entidades de control (Superintendencia Bancaria) en funcià ³n de la captacià ³n de recursos (el ahorro) del publico. Tambià ©n se puede decir que hace parte del sistema, la financiacià ³n que se otorga a los emisores de valores a trabes del mercado publico de valores colombiano. Marco Regulatorio La constitucià ³n polà ­tica faculta al congreso de la Republica, para que este expida leyes de carà ¡cter general en las cuales se indiquen los objetivos y criterios a los cuales debe sujetarse el gobierno al momento de expedir las normas que regulan las actividades financieras y bursà ¡tiles. The ICC and Restorative Justice The recognition of victim’s rights as an integral part of the ICC is exemplified in the Preamble of the Rome Statute, which declares that the ICC was created, in part, in recognition of the fact that â€Å"during this century millions of children, women and men have been the victims of unimaginable atrocities that deeply shock the conscience of humanity.† However, the ICC’s recognition of victim’s rights does not go towards the effectiveness of the ICC at achieving the victim’s goals. The ICC cannot effectively achieve the goals of restorative justice because of: (1) it’s inflexible demand for Western methods of adjudication; and (2) its inherent emphasis on societal rehabilitation as opposed to individual rehabilitation. First, the ICC places an unabated amount of pressure on the demand for a criminal prosecution in the context of a courtroom. Deliberate Alienation: Surrealism and Magical Realism Critical thinking is a terrible thing. At least, that seems to be a popular opinion. We live in an age where people are willing to look to anyone but themselves for advice on what they should think. Rather than figure out what their own opinions are, they trust the thinly-veiled slant of the television newscasters, the politics-masquerading-as-reporting of magazines like Time and Newsweek. There are fashion shows and magazines that tell you what you think is stylish. Children in grade school and high school are actually discouraged from thinking differently from their peers or from their teachers. Even television commercials or assigned readings in school that encourage positive behavior are only promoting this phenomenon of mental laziness: whether people are told to think good things or told to think bad things is unimportant; either way they're still not doing their own thinking. Lest we become a culture of zombies, it seems important somehow to stop this disturbing trend. But how to combat this kind of apathy? Any appeal to the brain-dead must require them to use that very organ which they are allowing to atrophy. Perhaps some shock therapy is in order. There's a reason our language contains the phrase "to slap some sense into" someone. I propose that the best way to cure such mental apathy is to attack it. By presenting the individual with an apparent reality which contradicts or prevents what s/he is familiar or comfortable with, one would force him/her to spend the necessary cognitive effort to correct or reconcile the discrepancy, or risk existing in an utterly absurd, impossible, and nonsensical world. Bankers prior to the establishment of the Federal Reserve would establish lines of credit with larger banks. In the event of a run, the smaller bank would draw on the line of credit. In times of panic, large numbers of depositors would demand to withdraw their money, and only the largest Wall Street banks, with millions of dollars in reserve, could guard against this. In the early twentieth century, people were running to withdraw all their cash from their accounts, this may seem dramatic, almost theatrical to people today. Nevertheless, to people living in an economically unstable society, they were an expected occurrence. The banks were independent rivals, the amount of currency in circulation was fixed, and there was no element of trust between the depositor and the bank. However, in an attempt to avoid bank runs, they were storing their money for the inevitable, which meant they did not lend any money out, bringing the economy to a standstill. The credit system of the country ha d ceased to operate, and thousands of firms went into bankruptcy. Something had to be done that would provide for a flexible amount of currency as well as provide cohesion between banks across the United States. A large regulated bank, like the Federal Reserve, could make this happen which was to establish banks as a united force working for the people instead of independent agencies working against each other. By providing a flexible amount of currency, banks did not have to hoard their money in fear of a bank run, so there was no competitive edge to see who could keep the most currency on hand and a more expansionary economy was possible. President Wilson passed the Federal Reserve Act into law December twenty-third, nineteen thirteen, which created the Federal Reserve System and converted central banking into a government monopoly. All nationally chartered banks were required to maintain reserves with a regional Federal Reserve Bank. The regional reserve banks would be managed not for profit and in the "public interest," by political appointees. The Act divided the country into twelve districts, each district with its own banking "center." The banks within each district were then divided up with respect to size, so that small banks, medium banks, and large banks all have the same voting power. An appointed board of governors would oversee all bank operatio... ...coming out of a recession in the beginning of the twenty first century, the Fed had heavily dropped the interest rate to counter the increase in unemployment and jump-start the economy to meet its goal of a steady rate of economic growth. As the economy reacted to the low interest rate in expanding, the Federal Reserve has begun to raise interest rates accordingly. The Federal Reserve should continue to monitor the growth of the economy and not be shy in continuing to raise interest rates to prevent an over zealous economy. With a constant increase in the interest rates, The United States economy is slowing down by not investing as much, as well the consumer market is slowing down for the expected rise in interest rates. The economy has had its difficulties, and the Federal Reserve has done the best it could to handle it. The Fed has to understand that there is no one causes to a problem, and not handling the problem correctly may lead to an even bigger problem. As time progresse s, the Federal Reserve should acknowledge that controlling the economy is a learning experience, and what was used in the past to solve a recession is nothing more than a good place to start in the future.

Agribusiness as a way of life Agribusiness for me is a systematic structure of well coordinated and oriented subsystems which makes the agriculture stable. Agribusiness can be viewed as a system, in which it compose of many subsystems. In agriculture where crops are cultivated to produce crops, the agribusiness plays an important role to distribute those crops in proper places at high value. Well, we all know that agriculture doesn't only involve in crops but also in poultry and livestock, fishery and forestry.It also plays an important role of the daily lives of the people, where the incessant interaction and circulation of commodities is discerned. Without Agribusiness, goods and services will not be delivered to various consumers and the needs and wants of the people cannot be attained. Agribusiness is tantamount to open system which composes of various subsystems. And in order for the system to be viable, its subsystem should also be viable. Any system has its own gaps and weakne sses that may lead the whole system to collapse.And it is obvious that to prevent the whole system to collapse, the operation of each and every subsystem should be well orchestrated, well coordinated and lastly well synchronized to make the whole system viable as it should be. By effective coordination and synergism, agribusiness as viable open system can be attained. The importance of agribusiness as a field of discipline is that we will discern the gaps and weaknesses of our career in which we could devise some individual developmental plan to improve ourselves as well mounded individual, highly competitive meeting national and global needs.Due to ineffable importance of agribusiness in people's daily lives. Many improvements were developed to make human needs, wants and activities much more accessible and easier leading to global industrialization. Annually, investments trends, prospects or development in agribusiness continuously devised to sustain domestic and global needs.
